A Message from our President

Hello and Welcome!
We are the Canadian Association of Paediatric Nurses (CAPN), and we represent nurses from all across Canada who work with children and youth. Working with the Canadian Nurses Association we promote education for paediatric nurses and set the national practice standards for nurses who work with this underserved population. Partnering with other national organisations such as Children’s Healthcare Canada and the Pediatric Chairs of Canada, we aim to promote the health and well-being of Canadian children and youth by advocating for a rightsizing of resources allocated to child and youth health at federal and provincial levels.
Foundational to CAPN’s mission is advocating for excellence in paediatric nursing practice. Through our partnerships and collaboration, CAPN promotes paediatric nursing education, research, and knowledge translation, highlighting issues that are central to child and youth health, such as the climate crisis, Indigenous cultural safety, the eradication of childhood poverty, and equitable access to care.
CAPN is on the forefront of national advocacy for child and youth health at a pivotal time. The long-standing and well documented health human resource crisis is felt even more acutely in paediatrics. The specialised education needed to provide paediatric nursing care means it takes more time to develop expert paediatric nurses which exacerbates the staffing shortage (2024, House of Commons Standing Committee on Health). Now, more than ever, collaboration is needed to support paediatric nurses, amplify paediatric nurses’ voices, and ensure that paediatric nursing has a strong presence at tables where child and youth health is discussed.
We are keen to hear your thoughts and ideas about how we can work together to strengthen paediatric nursing in Canada. Please email us at support@paednurse.ca if you have any questions or suggestions.
